Stretch the stress away.
Prep your body for the days events. I find it helps me more to stretch before the onset of stress. Otherwise it can take twice the time to stretch it out. The day goes better for me when I stretch in the morning before anything tries to ruin my day.
Before we begin, breathing is as important as stretching. Each breath should be a slow and full expansion of your lungs. For me it's a count of 7 seconds to inhale fully. You should then hold your breath for 3 seconds and exhale for the same about as the inhale again holding your breath for 3 seconds after you exhale. Now that you know that, let's get limber.
First thing in the morning, before you pee, bring the right knee to your chest keeping the left straight and hold it there for 3 deep breaths. Then pull it across your body with your left hand for another 3 breaths. Repeat with the left leg.
Upper Back and Neck
Next, sit on the edge of your bed. Clasp your hands together in front of you, take a deep breath and as you exhale drop your chin to your chest. Press your arms out in front of you and your chin farther into your chest. Your back will round, hold your breath and bring your head up as you inhale. A more intense version of this stretch is from yoga. I learned it as The Plow.
On the next exhale tip your head so your ear is reaching to your shoulder. Inhale and raise you head again. Exhaling your head to the other side again reaching your ear to your shoulder. Inhale up again and repeat the clasp, chin drop and press.
Lower Back and Butt
Now stand next to your bed, feet shoulder width apart, and reach for your toes. Hang loose there for 5 breaths. When you come back to a standing position do it slowly concentrating on rounding your back through each vertebrae. Repeat. Now, put your hands on your knees with your knees slightly bent. Alternate arching your back pressing your chest toward the floor and rounding your back and extending your arms and legs.
Now you are more relaxed and ready for your day.
Knowing everybody is different, options for when the stretches could be done are, after a warm morning shower or after your morning run. But stretching is the most important thing you can do when it comes to the physical exercise.
