Exercise Your Mind

Well, this is where I admit to one of my flaws. I am forgetful. Not just a little bit. I forget nearly everything. Swimming Lessons for the kids, appointments, when I’m supposed to have a blog post up. And sometimes even what day of the week it is. I have forgotten to blog for nearly a month now and I’m disappointed in myself. So I did some research to see if this was something I was born with or if it was something I can fix.

You can fix it. Yes, it is practice and exercise. This exercise requires you to be engaged in having fun, sitting on the couch, soaking up some sun, waiting in the doctors' office, watching swimming lessons. Anytime! Anywhere! You get to PLAY GAMES! It only takes a few minutes a day. The key is consistency to keep your mind well trained. Because I’m forgetful already I require reminders. There's an APP for that!

The app I’m using right now to get myself in shape is Fit Brains Trainer. Best thing: it’s FREE!

Fit Brains Trainer (FBT) is something to love. FBT will customize your brain workout for whatever you seem to be cognitively struggling with. Problem solving, concentration, efficiency, and so on. Mine is specific for memory. It also sends you notifications (if wanted/needed) to remind you that you need your training. It tracks your progress and rates your reaction time and accuracy.

I’m excited to increase my memory! After all…

Letter from a 10-Year-Old Girl

I know I haven’t acomplished a lot this year. I know that I might not be that special. But every one else in the class is. You might have something in you that might make you special. Well, okay, I might be pretty special. I might be a favorite character in a book or two*, I might be the one person in my family who cheers everyone up. I might be my family’s #1 artist of all time. I might have made a few differences to people’s lives. But if you beleive, trust, and look at yourself a little more, you can acomplish way more that you ever did before. But it might take a little time, since I haven’t figured it out yet. But I bet you can. I have learned so much through so many exsamples. Teachers, students, family, freinds, strangers! But when you figure it out, you can make a big difference.

I was cleaning out my daughter's room yesterday and found this letter she wrote to herself and to the world. I had to fight back the tears so they wouldn't land on the paper and smear the ink. I was overwhelmed because those words helped me see a part of my daughter I didn't know existed.

Knowing where a person's value comes can teach you a lot about them. I've been trying to help her recognize her worth doesn't come from her peers, yet how often do I find myself asking, "Why did my friends do this without me?" or "I wish I was as smart (funny, skinny, pretty, etc.) as so-and-so."

So let's help each other out and take advice from a 10-yr-old. Let's believe, trust, and look at ourselves a little more. Let's learn from our family, friends, and strangers instead of compare or compete with them. Let's figure out what makes us special and, like my daughter, I know we'll make a big difference.

*No joke, she really is a character in the Sapphire Flute series.

Being Brave & Beautiful

I am Brave and Beautiful - a beauty movement that is sweeping the globe. Colbie Caillat started it with her recent song and video called TRY. My blogging friend Megan of Brassy Apple wanted to push this movement along and invited women from all over to share what they looked like without make up and I joined in!! Colbie's song says, "Take your make up off. Let your hair down... Look into the mirror at yourself, Do you like you? Cause I like you... "

Megan and her friend Cobi of Peacefrom6pieces have been the team behind this whole project. Their worldwide vision included creating their own video inspired by the song TRY. The talent of Robbins Creative made it possible for them to pull it off. You have to click play and see the beauty and bravery displayed and you might even recognize a few faces in there.

Me along with 101+ other blogging women from different backgrounds, religions, ethnicities, ages, shapes and sizes have decided to be Brave and Beautiful! You can join in this movement too by sharing what you look like without makeup on. You don't need a blog either! Just tag your photo with #IamBraveAndBeautiful on Instgram and search the hashtag to see who else has joined in. ALSO, if you tag it with a second hashtag - #ColbieTRY we just might be able to get Colbie Caillat's attention since she was the inspiration behind it all!

Are you brave and beautiful? I am. Here I go!

And sans makeup…

I go out in public a lot without makeup, but never without my glasses. Mostly because I need them to see, but also because they're my shield. Sharing this no-makeup pic is strangely liberating. I'd like to think I share all of me with you on this blog, but now you're truly *seeing* me. Now it's time to see you too.
